But nevertheless, there is no shortage of the material that is willing and even anxious to have the life worn out of it, or at least, take the chances for! four or' eight years. The English are particularly slow in arriving at conclusions, but it must have been a pretty big doubt that it took nine years to surmount. Hon. M. D. Harter, of Ohio, is striking for trusts in a matter-of-fact, business like way.:: He has intro duced a bill in the House of Repre sentatives which provides that when i is shown that the manufacturing, price or distribution of any article of general consumption is practically under a Trust, that article shall be made free of duty arid all patents for its protection cancelled. That would be hitting the" Trusts in the "witals." Alexander Jacques has just ac complished the feat of going through a fast upon which he entered Decem ber 5. His only nourishment was water and 167 pinches of a powder of his own composition. He didn't only fast, but grew fast, growing an inch and a quarter in that time. If the powder and water have this effect, it ought to have a run with short men, although they might not find it so easy to run the fast schedule. . This country! is not going to be behind other countries even when it comes to volcanbes. One is reported in New Mexico as going into busi ness in good style, and beginning operations by blowing the whole top of the mountain off. - As the moan tain at I the top was about a mile square this was a pretty big blow, and a pretty serious .one for the mountain. But perhaps it was the N. M. 'scribe who was doing the HE VOL. LI.-NO, 580 Mr. Halford, the President's private secretary, as Paymaster in the army, will have, a nice soft snap for life. He will get a salary of $2,500, which increased 10, per Cent every , five years v He gets rent,' forage for two horses, and medical attendance gratis, and can purchase all familv suDDlies from the Government stores at cost. and if he should live to be sixty-four will be retirea on three nuartprs alary for life; j While "Mr. Harrison s stepping out of a good thin? he is is helping his jyoung trfend Elijah to step in." : M J.-:"';.-'-, -';':' If you are ever hit by a bolt of lightning, you Heed not be surprised if you are killed, for a German scien tist who has! been experimenting says a bolt of j lightning strikes with force of 3,500,000 volts, equal to the concentrated energy of 3,284,182 'horses or mules. Imagine that many mules amalgamated into one." and that one planting his heels with the aforesaid energy on one poor mortal, and think where' and. with what ce lerity he . would land in kingdom come, i . I ' - . - Chairman Carter of the Republi can National Committee agrees with the former Chairman Clarkson that the very best jway to reach the voters with campaign literature is through the newspapers. He thinks that about 75 perscent. of the stuff sent out - by his committee in the last campaign found its way unread into the trash piles, for the reason proba bly that the people looked upon them as' piles of trash. A hustling; man stands a better chance of being elected to a State office in Massachusetts than in al most any othr State in this country for, there ; they elect a full State ticket every year. ;But they are get ting tired ofjthis kind of amusement and are talking about amending the constitution so as tpj provide for bi ennial elections. j . ! !BV7 ADVERTISEMENTS.
